Surrounded by Iran, why did Trump withdraw his army from Syria after a decade?

After two decades, the US withdrew its troops from Afghanistan in 2021, now almost 15 years later, it has also withdrawn all its troops from Syria. The withdrawal of American troops from here is happening at a time when the Trump administration is embroiled in a war with Iran. At the same time, the threat of a new war of supremacy in Syria between Turkey and Israel has increased. After removing Assad from power, Russia will also try to strengthen its position in the absence of America. Currently, Russia has two military bases in Syria, while the US also handed over its last military base to the Syrian interim government on April 16.

In 2015, the US military entered Syria for the first time. He fought the war against ISIS for almost a decade. The 2024 coup against Bashar al-Assad’s regime brought Syria closer to the US. An interim government was formed under the leadership of terrorist Abu Muhammad al-Julani, founder of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

The equation changed with the arrival of al-Shara

Al-Julani’s government became very close to America. While there was a time when America placed a 10 million dollar bounty on Abu Muhammad al-Julani. Later, he not only removed the reward but also gave him a new identity as Ahmad Hussain al-Shara. Now Shaara’s government doesn’t do anything without asking the US. Recently he went to the White House. Here he met with Donald Trump. From this you can understand the importance of Shaara in the eyes of America.

Afghanistan’s mistake was not repeated

In Afghanistan, where the US had to hand over the keys of power to the Taliban. Along with this, he was successful in achieving a strategic victory in Syria. Before withdrawing troops, the US succeeded in installing a government in Damascus that would look after its interests. This is why the US is withdrawing its troops from Damascus quietly and without tension.

What confidence does the US have in the Syrian government?

Due to American pressure, the Kurdish army merged with the Syrian National Army on January 30 this year. A divided Syria under the Assad government came under one banner under Shara’s leadership. Because of this, the US is confident that the new Syrian government can deal with any terrorist threat. ISIS may be active in Syria’s eastern desert, but it will not have the opportunity to thrive. If it tries to raise its head again, the Syrian army will crush it. America has also assured help if needed.

Will Trump present this as a victory?

Donald Trump hailed the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a major victory. Attacked Iran within two months. Trump felt that the citadel of Tehran would soon fall and he would be able to present it to the public as a major victory before the midterm elections. But here his tactics were reversed. Even if Trump wanted to, he could not get out of this quagmire. This is why Trump, who tried to withdraw troops from Syria twice in his first term, can present the current withdrawal from Damascus as a major victory.
