Murder of Ghaziabad student in Canada; The murderer was sentenced to life imprisonment abroad

A Toronto court in Canada has sentenced a man to life imprisonment in the case of the murder of Indian student Karthik Vasudev. A Toronto Superior Court led by Justice Jane Kelly on Monday convicted Richard Edwin of two counts of murder as part of a conspiracy to kill two strangers on April 7 and 9, 2022, Global News Toronto reported.

Edwin shot and killed Vasudev, a 21-year-old student of Seneca College, a resident of Ghaziabad. He confessed to this crime before the court. After this, the defense argued in court that the accused was suffering from mental illness and could not distinguish between right and wrong, so he should not be held criminally responsible.

Shot on the stairs

The court accepted that Edwin was suffering from ‘schizophrenia’ at the time of the incident, but rejected NCR’s argument and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The father of the deceased student told news agency PTI in detail about the court order. Accordingly, Karthik Vasudev was walking from Sherborne Station towards the Bloor Street East stairs when Edwin passed him, then turned around and fired several shots into Vasudev’s back.

Went to Toronto to study business

Jitesh Vasudev, father of Karthik Vasudev from Toronto, said he and his wife stayed in Canada to attend the final hearing. “After a four-year legal battle, we finally got justice,” he said. Karthik Vasudev moved to Toronto to study business in January 2022, but was murdered within months. Vasudev’s body was later brought to Ghaziabad, where his younger brother cremated him on the banks of the Hindon River.
