In Nepal, people are now against Blaine, there is a ban on the 100 rupees rule associated with India

The newly formed Blaine Shah government of Nepal is facing difficulties. There is strong opposition to imposing customs duty of up to 80 percent on Indian goods. People have come out on the streets in many places. The Nepali Congress has termed this move of the government as anti-people and insensitive. On the other hand, Rashtriya Ekta Dal president Binay Yadav has also termed this move as ‘undeclared blockade’. He demanded that the customs duty on domestic goods should be removed immediately.
According to the Times of India report, business has decreased in Jogbani, Raxaul and small huts in Bihar. Right now is the season of weddings. People from Nepal often visit the markets in the border areas of Bihar for shopping. About 50 rural small markets have been affected by this decision. The report also stated that people in Uttarakhand’s Dharchula and Tanakpur are now taking ration in installments instead of monthly. Movement of Nepali people has reduced in many markets of UP bordering Nepal.
Why are the people of Nepal worried?
Nepal and India share a border of about 1750 km. Due to inflation, a large number of Nepali people do daily shopping in Indian markets. But after the government’s strictures, Nepali citizens have reduced their purchases from India. The result is that people in Nepal have to buy goods at expensive rates. Especially the poor families of the border districts are the most affected. Due to this, protests have started in different places within Nepal.

Every citizen coming to India is being checked at the border. Customs duty is being demanded for goods worth more than 100 rupees. Security personnel have also been seen abusing people at many places. This has increased resentment.
Did the Blaine government impose any new rules?
If a person brings Indian goods worth more than 100 Nepali rupees (63 Indian rupees), he has to pay customs duty ranging from 5% to 80%. However, this is not a new rule. It’s just that the Blaine Shah government has started enforcing it strictly. At Nepal’s border posts, security personnel are announcing over loudspeakers that civilians, government employees and NGO workers are exempt. Indian goods worth more than 100 rupees will have to pay customs duty.
What is the Nepal government’s argument?
The Nepal government contends that there is currently illegal import of goods from India. There is also a huge loss of revenue. Along with this, the local traders have to bear the loss due to the cheap arrival of Indian goods. Due to this, the government of Nepal has to strictly implement the rules.

Blaine’s party also opposed
Blaine Shah’s National Independent Party has also raised its voice against the government. He says that imposing customs duty on goods up to Rs 100 is impractical. The government should reconsider it. The party argues that this decision will have a negative impact on low-income families.
