First announced the opening, then immediately closed Hormuz

Iran announced a temporary opening of the strait on Friday, but tightened it again on Saturday. Iran says that America is not following its words, so they have tightened the controls. Hormuz is a very important route for oil and gas. Due to rising tensions in the region, several ships have been stranded. India is seeking response from Iran on this incident. The Ministry of External Affairs has appealed to restore the safe movement of ships.

Why did Iran do this?

Iran recently announced the temporary opening of the Strait of Hormuz. It was part of the fragile ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran. The US continued its naval blockade of Iranian ports, in response to which Iran again blockaded Hormuz. The Iranian armed forces warned ships via radio messages that the strait was completely closed and that any ship attempting to pass through would be targeted as collaborating with the enemy.

The United Kingdom Navy also reported that Iranian gunboats fired at some of the ships. Hundreds of ships have been stranded in the Persian Gulf due to this blockade, which has affected oil and gas supplies globally. There has also been a sharp reaction from America. President Donald Trump has warned Iran that it cannot blackmail the US.

What will America do now?

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the US is preparing to board and seize Iranian-related vessels in international waters as part of Operation ‘Economic Fury’. Its purpose is to increase economic pressure on Iran and reopen Hormuz. General Dan Kane, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the US would enforce the blockade in Iran’s territorial seas and international waters.

Donald Trump said the embargo will continue until a peaceful deal is reached with Iran. This situation is challenging for India as we import oil from Iran. Hormuz is important for energy security. In the recent talks held at the level of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, both the countries emphasized on strengthening the relationship.

What is affecting the world?

These attacks have affected the global energy market. Oil prices have seen volatility, while shipping companies are now looking for alternative routes due to increased risks. The country’s navy is investigating the incident. No Indian warship is stationed in Hormuz. India has some destroyers and frigates in the Gulf.
